I do like the idea of community support but at that point it just kind of becomes a question of who is paying for what and is it a tax or a grant or a mandate from the government that is underfunded.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04973448750714819716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32362551.post-20015606659348917812008-09-17T19:31:00.000-05:002008-09-17T19:31:00.000-05:00Lance said "I like and have always liked the idea ...Lance said "I like and have always liked the idea of vocational schools."

My problem isn't with Vocational Schools, but with where they are offered, and how.

First and foremost however - proper classes or Vo Tech - my concern is that schools should not be tax supported, or at the very least, it should be a decision made, funded and managed at the local community level.

I have nothing against Vocational Schools, I think we'd be far better off if 80% of our post primary (6th... or maybe 9th grade) students went to a VoTech school, rather than a liberal arts school. Those not suited or inclined to a proper education benefit very little from being pushed into such classes, and do much to distract from the education of those who are.

But the worse damage VoTech classes have done to a proper liberal arts education, as the vast majority of college presidents foresaw and warned against when the first land grant colleges having 'agricultural studies' were proposed, is that they take away from the time available to students to study what is of Educational value, they devalue the importance of the valuable Lib Arts classes - anyone considering whether to take a Business mgmt 101 or Hist of Ancient Greece 101 has already had the later devalued by dint of the choice, and an uninformed evaluation of options between their own future financial prosperity vs 'unnecessary' dry old dead guy doin's, can't help but devalue True Education even further. Another ill side effect of mixing VoTech (or other 'elective' classes) with proper educational classes, is that the good classes have to contort themselves in order to try and appear 'more fun!' to students considering that Bus mgmt vs Anc Hist choice, which again means diluting and devaluing the proper educational content of all of the classes.

The difference between the education received, even with all the undoubtedly crude rote methods, of the Pre-Founders era, and that of today, or even early 1900's, is heartbreaking. What we've lost... it makes the current uproar over wall street bailouts, mere chump change.Van Harveyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08470413719262297062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32362551.post-27806593390835821182008-09-17T16:35:00.000-05:002008-09-17T16:35:00.000-05:00I like and have always liked the idea of vocationa...I like and have always liked the idea of vocational schools. I like the idea of students being able to have a choice as to direction. America will be in a bad spot if we forget how to make things. Which is just another reason that we need to keep jobs at home.

That being said. I still do not feel that she has had enough experience to do the job. But I also feel the same way about State Senators McCain and Obama. This whole election season has been a travesty.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04973448750714819716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32362551.post-15542264524143276982008-09-09T08:11:00.000-05:002008-09-09T08:11:00.000-05:00Sarah - here's a fun fact: reading is fundamental....Sarah - here's a fun fact: reading is fundamental. Try it. Had you read my post, instead of randomly looking for blogs to post your tripe, you might have noticed that I wasn't saying that a resemblance between Palin and TR was a good thing.

While TR had many outstanding traits as a person, as a President with a Progressive agenda, IMHO, he was an unmitigated disaster for our Nation.

Also, it points out that 'experience' alone, is of limited value.

Judgment is what is of value, and it is through reviewing the experiences the candidates have had, whether it be little or lots, that we can view some indications as to their judgment.

In the area of executive judgment, Palin's experience shows her to have very good and effective executive judgment - though I disagree with many of the actions she's taken.

obamama - not so much.Van Harveyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08470413719262297062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32362551.post-40665433902935306102008-09-08T23:17:00.000-05:002008-09-08T23:17:00.000-05:00A republican relative has informed me of one of th...A republican relative has informed me of one of the talking points (non-issues) that Teddy Roosevelt was only governor for two years before becoming president. A lot of folksy folks will hear this, and repeat it. However, many won’t take the time to really compare Palin, Roosevelt, Biden, McCain, and Obama. Here are some fun facts:

Teddy Roosevelt also:
• was a soldier in the army
• was a conservationist, calling for conservation of natural resources. He also played a large role in the slow, but eventual Wilderness Act of 1964,because of his preservation of many federally designated Wilderness Areas, many of which are still protected till this day under the Wilderness Act. He was also close friends with John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club.
• the first president to call for a universal health care system. Something that MCCain is against
• a self-proclaimed Progressive, something that Obama is as well
• Harvard student, something Obama is also.
• Went to law school. So did Obama. In fact, Obama was the president of the Harvard Law Review.
If you really want to compare Teddy Roosevelt to the Candidates, you’ll loose with McCain. Palin is a JOKE. I'm an outdoors woman, and Palin is not an asset to my demographic since her backwards policies on environment will actually continue to destroy wildlife habitat and federal land.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32362551.post-34125130891952958362008-09-05T19:39:00.000-05:002008-09-05T19:39:00.000-05:00Ben said "The main thing is, she really is Mr. Smi...Ben said "The main thing is, she really is Mr. Smith goin' to Washington. Some might call that naive, just as some called Reagan's "shining city on the hill" naive..."

Love that movie, and yeah, many would call that naive, but that's the typical response of the faux-wise (who are indeed our foes!), who attempt to posit cynicism as knowledge. What they really want to do is to knock down the Ideal of Truth (and all the knowledge, effort and integrity it requires), in favor of the simplest of things - doubt (not to mention covering up their fear).

Wimps. Note that's not the same thing as saying the obvious, that it will be difficult, it will take time and effort, and maybe even be unlikely to succeed in the near term - that is only being clear headed and objective. Recognizing the difficulties doesn't deny its value and worth, cynicism (philosophic childishness) does deny both.

"Sarah will accomplish much and bring honesty and integrity back to the GOP."

I do believe she will make great efforts towards that, but it will not be something one person alone can do, it will take rousing, informing and involving the nation over a period of years - alike but moreso than what Reagan used to do, however if anyone can inspire that, she certainly seems capable of it - keeping in mind though, that she's running for Vice President, not POTUS.

"It will take awhile to get rid of the RINO's like Lindsey Graham, or to at least marginalize them, but we have that spark we so desperately needed in Palin, and other up n' coming Republicans like Bobby Jindal."

She and Jindal are the rising GOP, however when looking at the RINO's, remember that McCain if not one of them, has certainly enabled them. Hmmm... "Palin/Jindal in 2012!" Now There's a bumper sticker I'd like to see!

"Time will tell, but by God, Sarah has me motivated n' inspired!"

Yes indeed. This weekend I plan on digging into the available facts about her, but as I was saying at OC, it is difficult to picture the history she has, surface level bullet points though they may be, her family (Just the faces of her husband and youngest daughter tale volumes) and her own poise, speaking ability and sense of life could not be what it is... but we'll see. And if that bunch of cherry picked partial facts and equivocations (ref'd through your link - I think someone, Walt? Julie? ref'd it earlier as well) is all the left can come up with, then she's good as Gold!

I'll update this post again later this weekend... what I'm really enjoying about this, fascinated about this, is that she really did come out of nowhere; completely unknown to me prior to last Fri, and based upon what she's said, and the little I know of what she's done (and how many others have said similar, claimed similar - from the revolting John Edwards on one side through to Mit Romney on the other, and neither of which convinced me one whit), I'm having to very deliberately hold my ground against being swept away with her.

A very interesting situation!Van Harveyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08470413719262297062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32362551.post-86743136485240887512008-09-05T04:24:00.000-05:002008-09-05T04:24:00.000-05:00Excellenr post, Van! But like you said, Van, she is clearly unique!

And yet, she shares the principles and good sense of right n' wrong that we share.

That's not to say there isn't some things I disagree with her about, but that's minor stuff.

The main thing is, she really is Mr. Smith goin' to Washington.
Some might call that naive, just as some called Reagan's "shining city on the hill" naive, but I believe Sarah will accomplish much and bring honesty and integrity back to the GOP.
Goin' back to our roots.

It will take awhile to get rid of the RINO's like Lindsey Graham, or to at least marginalize them, but we have that spark we so desperately needed in Palin, and other up n' coming Republicans like Bobby Jindal.

I may be jumping the gun on this, but after readin' all of those smears the left managed to dredge up and make up, I'm confident that Sarah can become our Maggie Thatcher/Reagan, only different...perhaps even as good. :^)

Time will tell, but by God, Sarah has me motivated n' inspired!USS Ben USN (Ret)https://www.blogger.com/profile/07492369604790651538noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32362551.post-33448320159846598002008-09-03T22:37:00.000-05:002008-09-03T22:37:00.000-05:00Mushroom said "When a speaker compares Palin to TR...Mushroom said "When a speaker compares Palin to TR that's what is in mind.
