Even though I disagree on the ...Hi Van!<BR/>A good post! Even though I disagree on the main point, namely the prominence given to religion, I do agree that the standard of education has plummeted. I, like you, have noted that a text book in, for example, mathematics for elementary school in Sweden during the 1800 could contain an equation system like “define x for: x/a+b=x/b+a” but today you’ll only find task of this complexity in upper secondary school (the answer is by the way x=-ab). We could go on to the social sciences where I for my part was ordered to memorize the names of the ministers in the then ruling cabinet and told that the difference between the parties (in Sweden we have seven of them in our parliament) could be boiled down to what level of taxation they proposed. All disentangled and atomistic facts unrelated to the history of ideas and ideology. I do think that education, and the science above all, would profit immensely if only the laws and principles contained therein were related to the greater scheme of thought wherein they developed. <BR/>I’ll get back to you in a post as soon as time allows.
